If you have a good ML background with good R&D skills, do not settle for lower salaries or let the tech companies pay you the usual salary they pay for an "equivalent position"; for example, average software engineer salary for someone with equivalent YoE. During the negotiation, demand at least about 25% above the average software engineer salary in that company. Good Machine Learning Engineers with the right skillset are hard to find and the companies are willing to pay extra.
